USA: Wrigley builds $63 million factory in Kenya

The Wrigley Company, the global chewing gum firm that is a subsidiary of Mars, Inc., has begun construction on a new $63 million factory in Kenya.

The new plant will be sited on a 20-acre plot of land in Mavoko as a replacement for a previous facility located in Nairobi’s Industrial Area. It is expected to produce 7.84 billion pellets of chewing gum annually once the factory commences its production in the first quarter of 2017.

Designed to meet growing demand for Wrigley products in Africa, the new Makovo plant will also feature improvements to capacity and technology, according to reports.

The firm’s global president, Martin Radvan, said: “As we break ground today on this new world-class factory, we demonstrate our long-term commitment to driving sustainable growth here in East Africa, as well as in South Africa and in our newly launched business in West Africa".

 “This investment in an enhanced facility gives us the chance to diversify into other types of confectionaries besides chewing gum in the future”, he added.
