USA: FDA proposes new nutrition facts label

Suggestions for new nutrition facts labels for packaged foods have recently been proposed by the  US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reflect the latest scientific information, including the stated link between diet and chronic diseases such as obesity and heart disease.

According to Australian Food News, the FDA has said that the new labels would also replace out-of-date serving sizes to better align with how much people actually consume, and would also feature a fresh design to highlight key parts.

Margaret A. Hamburg, MD, FDA Commissioner, commented on the change by saying that “For 20 years consumers have come to rely on the iconic nutrition label to help them make healthier food choices.”

She continued: “To remain relevant, the FDA’s newly proposed Nutrition Facts label incorporates the latest in nutrition science as more has been learned about what consumers eat and the development of serious chronic diseases which impact millions of Americans.”
