USA: Amazon to operate bricks and mortar convenience stores – reports

E-commerce giant Amazon is looking to push further into the FMCG space by opening physical stores to sell grocery products, according to a report in the Wall St Journal.

Quoting "people familiar with the matter", the news outlet reports that, under the plans, groceries such as fresh produce, milk, meat and other perishable goods would be available to purchase from these bricks and mortar stores, while ambient goods would be available to order for same-day delivery via touchscreens or mobile devices.

In addition to these outlets, which would reportedly be aimed at users of Amazon's Fresh service, the retailer is further planning to open drive-in locations in order to operate a 'click and collect' grocery service, the report continues.

The rumoured move comes after the firm expanded its fresh grocery push into new markets beyond the US, including the UK and other countries in Europe.
