USA: $270 million Mars plant opens in Kansas

Mars Inc. has opened a new 500,000 square feet plant worth $270 million in Topeka, Kansas which is said to be the company’s first new facility in North America in 35 years.

Food Business News reports that the company will initially manufacture products for its North America unit producing brands such as Snickers and M&M’s, however other product lines will be added in phases.

Debra A. Sandler, president of Mars Chocolate North America spoke of the opening by saying: “This new $270 million facility will bring 200 new jobs to Topeka and is one of the largest investments in Mars history.”

Food Business News notes that in December 2013 Mars Inc. also announced it was investing $11.7 million to upgrade its plant in Waco, Texas. The facility makes all of the Starburst and Skittles candies sold in the United States along with other products.
