USA: Nestle partners with biotechnology provider Cellular Dynamics International

Nestle has announced that it has entered into a partnership with biotechnology firm Cellular Dynamics International (CDI) as it seeks to invest in research into diet and diseases.

In statement, CDI stated that it had signed a long-term agreement to supply stem cells to the Nestle Institute of Health Sciences, although the financial terms were not disclosed. The new venture will reportedly allow Nestle to increase its capacity to develop nutritionally-enhanced products and meet increased demand for functional foods.

Nestle has recently stepped up its efforts to join up food with scientific research, with a particular emphasis on ‘medical’ foods for an aging population. In 2011 it opened its Health Science unit, while last year the company announced its intention to acquire US company Pamlab, a medical food provider, as well as purchasing a stake in Accera, which provides products that cater for Alzheimer’s patients.
