UK: Warburtons submits plans for £20 million factory in Lancashire

Warburtons, the largest bakery group in the UK, is planning to build a new £20 million ($33 million) bakery next year. Subject to planning permission, the new plant will be built adjacent to an existing facility at a site in Burnley and will produce the Warburtons range of Sandwich Alternatives, as well as Wraps and Thins.

The new location in Burnley was said to have been chosen due to its supply chain links as well as the general suitability of the site itself. If planning permission is granted, the new facility could produce up to 5,500 products per hour. In addition, 60 jobs could be created.

Neil Campbell, managing director at Warburtons, said: “As a family business, we are able to take decisions for the long term and this planned investment demonstrates our continued commitment to the future growth of the business.”

He continued: “Over the past decade we have invested more than £400 million ($664 million) in our infrastructure to ensure we can make the best quality products that our consumers know and love”.

In addition to the Burnley site, Warburtons operates bakeries in Bristol and Bolton.
