UK: Tesco to implement plastic egg boxes in food waste reduction initiative

Tesco has announced that is to change its egg box packaging from board to plastic in an effort to reduce food waste.

According to the retailer, if an egg breaks while in transit it can leak through a standard board carton and damage surrounding units.  Up to a million eggs a year can be wasted in this way, it reports.

Lee Gray, a tecnologist at Tesco, commented: "We know that plastic packs reduce food waste - now we have a pack that will reduce food waste and offer customers a more environmentally-friendly packaging solution.

"If used across all our free range egg range then it will save on average more than one million eggs each year that would otherwise be going to waste.

"The results of the trial are very positive and we hope to be able to roll out the packaging by the end of the year".

The retailer, which has been trialling the new 12 egg packaging over the past 2 months across 200 stores, claimed that they take up less shelf and transportation space than standard board backs, and can also help reduce carbon emissions.
