UK: Sainsbury’s rolls out bicycle delivery service

Sainsbury’s, the UK supermarket chain, has rolled out what it describes as a on-demand, one hour delivery service app called Chop Chop, with goods delivered by bicycle.

The Chop Chop app was initially made available to the Wandsworth area in London for a trial period, but now the retailer is looking to expand the service by adding 35,699 new postcodes in the capital. The new app allows customers to order up to 20 items and have their shopping delivered by bicycle for a flat fee of £4.99 ($6.11).

To run the service, Sainsbury’s added that it had recruited a team of 40 shoppers and cyclists, with the shoppers operating out of the firm’s Pimlico and Wandsworth stores

Commenting on the rollout, Sainsbury director of digital and technology Jon Rudoe said: “This trial is part of our strategy to give our customers more options to shop with us whenever and wherever they want.  Speed of delivery is important to some customers, so we have brought back our bicycle service to test demand further”.

“If it proves popular we might introduce it to other areas of London”, he added. “It complements our same day delivery service which is available at selected London postcodes through our online groceries service”.
