UK: Aldi launches e-commerce venture with online wine store
German discount retailer Aldi has made its first foray into e-commerce in the UK with an online store selling wines by the case, according to a report in the Independent.
The firm is said to be investing £35 million ($49 million) in the venture, which will allow consumers to pick from a choice of 90 wines, including rose and sparkling . Consumers will be able to choose from a case of a six wines and a ready-mixed case from a selection of regions.
Delivery will be free for orders over £50 ($71) or £3 ($4.23) for lower value orders.
Aldi UK chief executive Matthew Barnes commented: "Starting with wines is a logical first step for us. It’s a stand-out category for Aldi and often the entry point for customers who haven’t shopped with us before".
Speculation emerged last March that Aldi might be considering branching out into online retail, although this was denied by the firm. At the time a company spokesperson is reported to have commented: “E-commerce is not an immediate focus for Aldi as we currently have the best performing business model in the grocery sector".
