Netherlands: Jumbo introduces sauces made with wasted food

Dutch retailer Jumbo has launched a new range of table sauces, developed in partnership with Verspillingsfabriek ('Waste Factory'), an organization that uses wasted ingredients to prepare soups, sauces and spreads.

The new range includes Tomato Ketchup, Curry Ketchup and BBQ Ketchup and according to sources it was created by Jumbo's Innovative Lab and Jumbo's chef Ton Verhaar, using wasted tomatoes from Jumbo’s supply chain and other natural ingredients.

Jumbo's commercial director, Ed van de Weerd said: "Of course, ketchup is a well-known product, but ketchup developed from rescued fresh tomatoes tastes surprisingly different".

"We use formulas that contain much less sugar and salt, resulting in three delicious fresh ketchups. If you compare these with other ketchups on the market, you can really taste the difference", van de Weerd added.

With the launch, the retailer attempts to reduce food waste whilst creating awareness of the topic among consumers.

The ketchups are available in 200ml bottles, priced at €1.99 ($2.23).
