Japan: Akagi Nyugyo launches sports drink flavoured ice cream
Akagi Nyugyo, a Japanese manufacturer of ice cream and confectionery products, has announced the extension of the long-standing ice cream brand Gari Gari Kun with the launch of a new flavour that is claimed to taste like an isotonic drink.
Offered under the Shari Shari Kun brand, the novelty Sports Drink flavour has been designed for the hot summer months and offers “coolness and hydration”. Unlike the ordinary Gari Gari Kun range, the new variety is said to have a 'snow cone' texture and will be presented in a soft plastic case so consumers can “suck” the ice cream instead of crunching it. The product is described as containing grapefruit juice, arginine, valine, isoleucine and salt so it tastes more like a sport drink.
Shari Shari Kun Sports Drink Ice Cream is a 200ml product with an RRP of ¥130 ($1.20) and will be rolled out at convenience stores nationwide from 26th July.
