Germany / Belgium: Heinz looks to close two facilities

H.J. Heinz Co. has announced plans to close two facilities in Europe that together employ almost 350 staff, TribLive reports.

The two facilities under threat are a factory in Turnhout (Belgium) that produces condiments and other products for restaurants and employs 157 people, and a plant in Seesen (Germany) with 190 workers making fridge packs of beans and pasta.

Heinz has also recently undertaken a similar rationalization programme in North America, where three factory closures have led to the loss of 1,350 jobs.

Michael Mullen, a company spokesman, said the closures were “part of a comprehensive and on-going review of our company's European supply chain footprint.”

Work from the Belgium and German plants is planned to be shifted to some of Heinz's 15 other factories in Europe, it is reported.
