Germany: Aldi Nord introduces traceability platform for meat products

German supermarket chain Aldi Nord has launched a new initiative designed to increase the traceability of its meat products.

The Aldi Transparenz Code (ATC), a numeric code found of the back of product packaging, is described as providing detailed information on the origin of meat and sausage products, as well as other products containing meat, such as filled pasta. The company said the aim was to have all fresh and cold meat products bearing the new ATC logo before rolling it out to other product ranges.

In addition to a numeric code, designed to be entered on a dedicated website, packs will feature a QR code allowing consumers to access the information using mobile devices, the company said. Details on the breeding, slaughter and further processing of the meat would all be available via the new platform, the company concluded.
