Canada: Sobeys launches South Asian discount store

Sobeys, Canada’s second largest food retailer, is looking to tap the ethnic market with the opening of its first South Asian discount grocery store, according to a report in Convenience Store News.

Named Chalo! FreshCo – the word "chalo" meaning “let’s go” in South Asia – the new store is located in Brampton, Ontario and is 50,000 square foot in size. Visitors will reportedly be able to find thousands of South Asian grocery products including rice, spices, lentils, snacks and a seafood department area, as well as halal and non-halal meat counters.

The store bears the slogan “Variety. Value. Vah!”.

Commenting on the move, Rob Adams, general manager – discount format at Sobeys, said: “Chalo! FreshCo is a significant and unique addition to our company’s food retailing lineup. This store caters to the South Asian market while also driving our mission to inspire Canadians to discover new foods, products and recipes, and to help them ‘Eat Better, Feel Better and Do Better’”.

“Our research indicates that many South Asians visit multiple grocery stores each week to fulfill their food shopping needs, from traditional grocers to small, specialty stores for specific products”, Mr Adams added. “Now, they can find the popular and unique products that they regularly look for and enjoy in one convenient location”.
