Canada: Mondelez International to close Montreal plant

US-based confectionery and snacks firm Mondelez International is closing its biscuit factory in Montreal, Canada, with the loss of 454 jobs, according to a report in The Globe and Mail.

The closure, which is slated for 2017, will see 95% of the plant's output shifted to the Toronto area and the remainder relocated to the firm's existing facilities in Portland, OR, USA.

The Globe and Mail quotes company spokesperson Stephanie Cass as saying that the decision on the factory, which produces Christie brand products such as Oreo biscuits and Ritz crackers, was the result of a supply chain review. The firm would maintain its activities across its five other Canadian production sites, she added.

Headquartered in Mississauga, ON, Mondelez Canada currently employs over 3,000 staff in multiple manufacturing facilities, sales offices and distribution centres across Canada, according to company website figures.
