Belgium: Ahold and Delhaize file joint merger proposal

Dutch retailer Ahold and the Belgian retail chain Delhaize have announced their intention to combine into a single company with the filing of joint merger proposal on the 15th January 2016.

The two companies originally announced their merger plans in June 2015, stating that their  intention was that of “creating an international retailer with a portfolio of strong, trusted local brands and more than 375,000 associates serving more than 50 million customers each week in the United States and Europe”, according to a press release published on Delhaize’s website.

The Belgian based retailer Delhaize said it filed the proposal at the clerk’s office of the Brussels Commercial Court. Subject to shareholder approval and regulatory clearances, the transaction is expected to be completed by the end of Q2 2016.
